Harry Hay is a forgotten, radical voice to the movement. He started as a Communist Party USA organizer and rose to be in charge of Marxist education programs for the Party before Cold War politics had the Party purging all of its open lesbians and gays, Hay included. He went on to form the Mattachine Society, the first gay rights organization in the US. Ironically, as that grew in stature the underlings staged a palace coups and ousted Hay because of his communism. Hay went on to found the Radical Faeries. Hay was no assimilationist. His gay liberation was anti-capitalist and not reverential or deferential of heterosexuals or patriarchy. The movement has suffered much with his silencing, just as our whole labor movement has suffered from the expulsion of communists from the unions. Anyone interested in the real radical roots of gay liberation and/or want to steer us away from adoration of heteronormativity and capitalist exploitation needs to read this book and know Harry Hay.
